Rugby: Newport 19 Old Northamptonians 6

Newport pushed their promotion credentials with a hard-fought 19-6 victory over Old Northamptonians in National League Three Midlands at Forton Road.

The weather enforced delay did not prevent Newport from displaying their typical fighting qualitiers as they soaked up everything visitors Old Northamptonians could offer – then hit them decisively at the other end.

“It was a good, hard, committed game of league rugby from both sides,” said team manager Gareth Davies.

“We were under a lot of pressure because they were a big, well-organised side and it was a testament to the coaches and the players that we managed to hold them to only two penalties.”

Newport ended up with three tries to show for their labours, with Toby Mann, Michael Woodhouse and Rob Clymer all crossing the line. Jamie Simpson kicked two conversions to round off the scoring for the home side.

The result helped them close the gap on third-placed Longton – who lost 25-17 at Malvern – to just three points.

Bottom-of-the-table Hereford crashed to another heavy defeat when they were soundly beaten 45-9 away at Sheffield Tigers.

The Tigers proved too strong for the Wyesiders, who have now lost 11 of their 13 National Three Midlands games, having conceded 457 points at an average of 35 per game.
