One on, one off for Boxing Day athletics

It’s a case of one on, one off for the Boxing Day athletics races in Shropshire.

The Severn Loop 5k event in Shrewsbury has fallen foul of the weather, but the Devils Chair Dash and Dawdle on the Stiperstones has beaten the big freeze.

Organisers of the south Shropshire event confirmed the race would definitely be on, with more than 300 runners and walkers set to take part from 11am.

John Sproson of the Stiperstones Inn, where the event starts, said: “We had similar conditions last year and it is 100 per cent on.

“We have some of the top runners and the race is a three mile event from the pub up to the chair and back again.

“There will be certificates for everyone finishing in under an hour and prizes in all age groups.”

Although the run is taking place, Sproson added that driving conditions in the area were a concern.

He said: “We would advise people to try and get here for 10am for an 11am start and to car share where possible.”

The event raises money for the Shropshire and Mid Wales Hospice and other charities. Entrants should be attired appropriately for the conditions. Refreshments are provided.

Meanwhile, the Severn Loop 5k has now being re-arranged for Sunday, February 13, after the freeze left the Quarry route covered in snow and ice.

The event, which has both a 5km and a 2km run, will start at the same times with pre-entries closing on Monday, February 7.
