First Class cricket could be coming to Shropshire – with Oswestry bidding to host a Glamorgan one-day match.

Officials from Oswestry met with their Glamorgan counterparts yesterday to discuss the prospect of staging a Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture at Morda Road next season.

The 2011 fixtures were only released yesterday and the south Wales county’s game with Somerset on Sunday, August 14 has been identified as the one that could come to Shropshire.

The Border club have already staged numerous Shropshire fixtures in the Minor Counties Championship but this would be the first time that a First Class county had come to Shropshire to play a home game.

“Some Glamorgan officials came to look at the ground yesterday and we had a long chat,” Oswestry club captain Mike Robinson revealed. “They’ve promised us a decision before Christmas so that, if we do get the nod, we can get on with organising it.

“We’d hope to make a little bit out of it but it would be more about the prestige if we are selected.”

Glamorgan play the majority of their fixtures at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff but already travel as far afield as Colwyn Bay in North Wales in order to reach fresh audiences within the Principality.

And Robinson believes the prospect of coming to Oswestry would be for similar reasons.

“The proposal came about as a result of a casual chat between Glamorgan officials and our club president Gwilym Owen,” he added.

“Glamorgan are looking to branch out and take the game around Wales.

“And, although we’re not actually in Wales, we are only about a mile away.”

Glamorgan include ex-Shropshire seamer Adam Shantry in their ranks.
