Shropshire umpire Steve Gale on First Class List
Tuesday 14th December 2010, 6:30PM GMT.
Shropshire umpire Steve Gale has been promoted onto the First Class List for the 2011 cricket season.
Gale, from Shrewsbury, represented Shropshire in the Minor Counties Championship between 1975 and 1987 and has been on the reserve umpires list for the last three years.
He gets his his chance following the retirements of Barry Dudleston and Vanburn Holder.
Gale will be contracted for 92 days next year and is likely to be on duty at most First Class grounds during that time.
“It’s nice for me personally but it’s also nice for Shropshire too,” he said.
“Ed Foster’s Shropshire team did fantastically well last season and this keeps the county on the map. It’s really good for Shropshire cricket that things like this happen from time to time – for a rural county I think we do okay.”
Gale has been promoted alongside former Lancashire and Worcestershire player Steve O’Shaughnessy.
And ECB Umpires’ Manager, Chris Kelly said: “We are pleased to welcome both Steve Gale and Steve O’Shaughnessy onto the Full List for 2011.
“Their commitment and attitude on the reserve list has been outstanding and their promotion is the result of some exceptional performances in County Championship matches.”
