The UK Snooker Championship starts in Shropshire with a bang tomorrow – with five world champions in action.

John Higgins – returning to ranking tournament action after a six-month suspension – Graeme Dott, Peter Ebdon and Ken Doherty are all in first round action at Telford International Centre.

And the all-star quintet is completed by reigning world champion Neil Robertson who begins his challenge against Rory McLeod.

Eight best-of-17 frame matches start tomorrow – the action gets under way at 12.30pm – with four played to a conclusion.

And they include reigning champion Ding Junhui who starts his defence against former UK Champion Matthew Stevens, in one of the ties of the opening stage.

“Winning the UK Championship title last year was definitely one of the highlights of my career so far,” said Ding.

World Snooker officials were applying the finishing touches to the tournament planning today, with the four match tables installed at the venue yesterday.

Crowd favourites Ronnie O’Sullivan and Jimmy White are amongst the players who start their bid to win snooker’s second biggest tournament on Sunday.

* Jason Ferguson will remain as chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association following their annual meeting in Sheffield yesterday.
