Triple boost for St Georges

Thursday 2nd December 2010, 11:29AM GMT.

St Georges have been handed a triple boost in their quest to usurp Castlefields as the premier bowls side in Shropshire.

The Dragons have swooped early for three new recruits as they aim to improve on last season’s second place finish in the Furrows Shropshire Premier League, when they ended 14 points adrift of champions Castlefields.

Peter Griffiths, who won 14 of 22 Premier League games for Ford last season and is fixtures secretary of the Ludlow League, has joined the Telford club.

And he has been followed by father-and-son combination Phil and Jamie King who have made the switch from Mid Shropshire Leaguers Hadley USC.

“I think it’s fair to say Peter is one of the best players outside of the county squad,” said St Georges joint captain Ian Gaut, who shares the duties with Tony Rhodes.

“There are not many players as consistent as Peter. Phil has also been very consistent in the Mid Shropshire League and Jamie’s a good young player so we are pleased with all the signings.”

And Gaut has revealed up to four more new faces could be on the way as they aimed to build on this year’s knockout triumphs in the County Cup, Alan Mayhew Trophy and Harris Cup by winning the Premier League in 2011.

“We have irons in the fire and they are all players who would be pushing for the Premier League team,” he added.
