Golden Danielle Brown’s Sunday best

Shropshire’s newest sporting sensation has celebrated her arrival in the county by picking up a major honour.

Archer Danielle Brown, who has just moved to Telford, has scooped The Sunday Times Disabled Woman of the Year following her gold medal performance at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The 22-year-old, who only took up the sport seven years ago, claimed gold in the team event despite battling reflex sympathetic dystrophy, meaning she is in constant pain and competes leaning on a stool.

And Brown, who has moved to be nearer her training base at Lilleshall, said the honour capped a ‘fantastic year.’

She said: “It’s been a great year and I was incredibly pleased to win the award. It’s an absolutely incredible honour and I was so surprised when my name was called out.”

In 2010 alone Brown has set Paralympic world records, qualified for a series of top tournaments and taken a home a host of awards — not least Commonwealth gold.

She added: “The Commonwealth Games was a great experience. To go there and compete in an able bodied competition and win gold was absolutely brilliant.

“I wasn’t keen to try out for the team to begin with but I was persuaded to go for it and ended up finishing second at the trials.”

And Brown is now turning her attention to the Paralympic Games in London.

“I’m going full time for 2012 now,” she said. “It’s going to be a great Games and I want to be part of it. I can’t wait.

“I’ve finished my degree in Leicester now and am looking forward to training at Lilleshall. It’s a fantastic place to be based.”
