Three-times world champion John Higgins is hoping to draw a line under “the toughest six months of my life” when he makes his return to big-time snooker in Shropshire next month.
The Scot has just completed a half-year ban after admitting bringing the sport into disrepute.
Higgins was cleared of match-fixing allegations but received a suspension and a £75,000 fine for not reporting the approach.
Higgins admits there were times when he wondered if his snooker career was at an end.
But is now excited about his ranking event return in the 12Bet.com UK Championship which starts at Telford’s International Centre on Saturday week.
“It has been the toughest six months of my life but it’s great now that it’s over,” said Higgins, speaking at a press conference with snooker supremo Barry Hearn at the tournament venue yesterday.
“The judgment has been passed and I can get back to playing snooker which is the only thing I know.
“Who knows if it will make me win more tournaments but it has made me more determined.”
Higgins has already made his comeback in lower-key events in two Players Championship events, winning on his return in Germany before losing 4-3 in the final to Michael Holt in Prague on Sunday.
And he has revealed the response from his fellow professionals to his return has been good.
Excited
“I have not had one bit of bother from the players,” he added. “At the end of the day, I will never be able to see what they are really thinking behind closed doors but to my face they have been fine and welcomed me back.”
Higgins, who was runner up to Ding Junhui in the final at Telford 12 months ago, is excited about his return to Shropshire.
“I think Telford has made its mark in snooker and the people love having it here so here’s hoping we can make it a great championship,” added the 35-year-old.

Snooker was always vaunted as a clean, gentlemans sport but the Higgins revalations changed all that for me. I used to watch all the big tournaments and go to the Crucible every year but now I feel as though I was being cheated.
