Rugby: Newport 32 Lucton 14
Tuesday 16th November 2010, 6:00PM GMT.
On-song Newport are up to fifth in National League Three Midlands after a third successive win, writes JAMES GARRISON.
The Forton Road side ran out comfortable 32-14 victors over Luton on Saturday and are just six points behind leaders Longton.
And manager Gareth Davies has revealed his side remain determined to go about their business quietly.
“Winning is a good habit to get into but we are not shouting from the rooftops or anything like that,” said team manager Gareth Davies.,
“We will let other people do the talking – we are just a group of people trying to do our best for the club, the town and the county.
“Saturday was really pleasing because it was arguably our best performance of the season.
“They were very physical but our boys stood up to that and executed what we wanted to do really well.”
A Chris Taylor try took Newport into an 11th minute lead but Luton edged 7-5 ahead with a converted score of their own.
The hosts’ response was swift with Rob Clymer scoring in the right hand corner for Jamie Simpson to convert, and the extras were also added for Newport’s third try which came for Matt Curgenven following an interception.
Luton gave themselves hope with a converted score at the start of the second period to reduce the deficit to 19-14 but Newport soon regained the initiative when Toby Mann burst through on the blind side to race over in the corner.
A Simpson penalty took Newport further ahead and the finishing touches were put to the win when, after the hosts made good ground from a rolling maul, Jake Goulson scored his side’s fifth try.
Rock bottom Hereford crashed to another crushing defeat when they were comprehensively beaten 54-10 by Old Northamptonians at Billing Road.
The defeat leaves Hereford eight points adrift at the bottom.
Winger Sean Day and replacement Simon Sabel scored their two tries.
