Bridgnorth and Shifnal keep alive FA Vase hopes

Bridgnorth and Shifnal aim to keep Shropshire’s FA Vase interest alive as they bid for a place in the last 64 tomorrow.

Both clubs have home advantage as they pit their wits against sides from the same division.

The task looks tough for Bridgnorth, who find themselves in the lower reaches of the Midland Alliance and host a Coalville team who not only top the table but also enjoyed a 4-0 triumph at Crown Meadow last week.

But Bridgnorth boss Lee Mills believes his side can turn the formbook on its head and earn a famous triumph plus a £1,000 boost to club coffers.

“It’s a very tough game but it’s a fantastic opportunity for the players to show they have learned from last week and, dare I say, a fantastic opportunity to try and get some revenge,” said Mills.

“We lost 4-0 last week but we had our chances and it might just take an extra 10 per cent from our lads to make the difference.

“It’s a cup competition and I’m long enough in the tooth to know that you can’t guarantee anything.

“When I was in professional football we played non-League teams who were six or seven levels below us and gave us a right run for our money – ourselves and Coalville play at the same level.”

Mills is hoping to have midfielder Lewis Sedgley back from illness while striker Andy Rich is bidding to have overcome a hamstring problem.

Shifnal have a realistic chance to progress as they entertain West Midlands League premier division rivals Bloxwich.

“It’s not very often you have the chance of a good run in a national cup like this so we have to make the most of having home advantage,” said boss Matt Flanagan.

“We lost to them 2-1 away in the first game of the season, but our squad has changed quite a bit since then and I guess the same goes for them.”

Gareth Horler, Tom Griffin and Rhys Adams return to ensure all 19 players are available for the first time this season.
