Former Shrewsbury professional Wes Robinson today did his best to derail England’s preparations for the Ashes.

Robinson, who spent the 2009 summer with the Birmingham League premier division champions, made 62 for Western Australia in the opening warm-up game at Perth.

Opening the batting for the hosts in the three-day game, 29-year-old Robinson’s innings came off 145 balls and included seven fours and a six before he fell caught and bowled to Paul Collingwood.

That was part of a decent opening to the Ashes tour for Andrew Strauss’ men who saw the home side declare on 242-8.

And Robinson hopes his team can inflict more damage on the tourists too, as they continue their preparation for this month’s first Test in Brisbane.

“We want to make life as difficult as we can for the English team,” he said. “I’d be happy to bowl them out for about 130.”

s Australia’s Ashes build-up suffered another blow today when Sri Lanka clinched the Commonwealth Bank series — and inflicted a seventh successive defeat on the hosts — with a 29-run victory in Sydney.
