The New Saints 3 Neath 1
Monday 1st November 2010, 8:21PM GMT.
The New Saints cemented second spot in the Welsh Premier with victory over Neath – despite being disrupted by a double injury blow.
Defenders Danny Holmes and Chris Marriott were both forced off with hamstring injuries midway through the first half to force a reshuffle.
But the Oswestry-based defending champions were already on their way to a seventh straight home win by then after Matty Williams had slotted home Craig Jones’ right wing cross on eight minutes.
After their injury disruption, the Saints still had the better chances on offer and Jones thought he had doubled the advantage after the break when his header was clawed away by keeper Craig Morris despite the ball appearing to be over the line.
However, there were no doubts about the second goal on 73 minutes when substitute Aeron Edwards played a one-two with Jones before laying the ball off for Alex Darlington to rifle home from 15 yards.
Richie Partridge added a third on 86 minutes, after Jones and sub Jamie Wood had combined, before Craig Hughes bagged a consolation three minutes into injury time.
It was a satisfying win for the Saints against their big spending visitors, but Mike Davies’ men still have plenty to do as they remain 13 points adrift of leaders Bangor City.
