Letter: Blame Lenny the Lion for Shrewsbury Town’s defeats
Saturday 30th October 2010, 11:08AM BST.
Letter: I wonder how much passion and pride Shrewsbury Town players feel wearing a Lenny the Lion badge on their shirts? There is no connection between a lion and the ancient and medieval borough of Shrewsbury.
The borough has had for centuries a badge comprising three loggerheads, similar to leopards, and the Roman motto Floreat Salopia – Let Shrewsbury Flourish.
I am sure the club would have sold many more shirts and other regalia particularly in the club’s 125th year if the old badge had been used. Town have won nothing since changing to that ruddy awful Lenny the Lion badge and I cannot see them winning anything in the future with it.
Just a hint the board is considering changing to a traditional badge will make all the difference.
I know the board is inviting supporters to help choose next year’s kit. Whatever is chosen I wish my beloved hometown football club all the best, but Mr Wycherley, please change that ruddy Lenny the Lion badge.
Everything is in place; a well-run club, excellent manager, promotion seeking squad, a new stadium and excellent sponsors all could be much better at this club with three loggerheads and Floreat Salopia on the players’ shirts and elsewhere.
Floreat Salopia.

I do agree, as do many fans. Get rid of the badge but don’t get rid of the best mascot in the Football League – Lenny’s a great ambasador for our club.

The club have changed their image with the times Tony. To blame the poor performances of the team on some club logo is more short sightedness that Mr Magoo..
Move on Tony…..

tony, if that’s all you’ve got to complain about, you’re fortunate! get over it.

Agree with the letter writer the new logo is a joke – why the club allowed clip art to be used is a mystery. Anyone with basic design knowledge knows not to use clip art in a design
Fortunately fans are now producing their own shirts with the loggerheads on so we don’t have to buy the clip art lion at the club shop
Lenny the Lion is great though and gets some great publicity for the club

From Atcham to Yorton people all over Shropshire recognise the need for some part of Shrewsbury Town’s history to be carried over. The Loggerheads return might help this to happen hopefully in it’s original form but maybe with some modernisation to help copyright.

You should be more careful what you say. The new badge is nothing to do with poor old Lennie who does a brilliant job for the club and the supporters. It was changed, not that long ago, because the old loggerheads motif couldn’t be copywrighted and the club needed to protect its interests. I think most people think it was a shame but sometimes there are good reasons for making changes.
