Shrewsbury town set sights on Southampton

Shrewsbury Town today set their sights on an FA Cup giantkilling act after being handed the most glamorous first round tie possible.
Town’s spirits were lifted after their dramatic 4-3 reverse at League leaders Chesterfield on Saturday was follwed by news of a Cup clash with Southampton.
They will travel to the League One big guns on Saturday week for what will be their first ever visit to the 33,000-capacity St Mary’s Stadium.
A Premier League team as recently as 2005, the Saints currently find themselves in 14th place in League One.
And Town boss Graham Turner today vowed his side will relish the occasion.
“On paper, it’s as tough a draw as any team could have got,” he said.
“It’s a game to look forward to as it’s a ground I’ve never been to and I’m sure it’s one that a lot of the players won’t have played at.
“A home draw would have been preferable and I know it’s a long journey for our supporters, but I’m sure it’s a game a lot of them will look forward to.
“I have been involved in a lot of teams in the Cup which has thrown up some surprise results and there is no reason we can’t believe that this is possible again.”
Turner and his squad were today sifting through the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat — their fourth away league losses in five outings.
Town trailed 4-0 before a late revival almost sealed an unlikely point.
“There was too much of an acceptance of Chesterfield’s dominance for periods of the game,” he said.
“There is a lesson there —when we go a goal down, we have to stick at it and keep playing at our pace.
“But we showed a bit of spirit and tenacity and we created a lot of chances.”
Turner was also encouraged by on-loan Bolton forward Tope Obadeyi.
“Young Tope deserved a goal,” added the Town boss.
“He worked tremendously hard, looked very lively and had one or two efforts at goal. When he had decent service into him, he got hold of it and turned people. He has got good pace and good mobility.”
