Former international footballer Steve Evans has been fined and stripped of the captaincy of Oswestry’s The New Saints’ after he was charged with urinating in the street.

Evans, who has played for Wales, will also be asked to carry out work in the community as part of his punishment.

The Welsh Premier club acted quickly when the 31-year-old was fined £200 after admitting the public order offence. They suspended Evans subject to the outcome of an internal investigation into the matter.

Owner Mike Harris said: “The board of directors of The New Saints FC have considered the details of Steve Evans’ public order offence and have heavily fined him in accordance with FAW regulations.

“We have instructed Steve that he has to fully comply with the strict rules set for him as part of his punishment, given him extensive community responsibilities within the club, as well as being removed from the position of team captain.

“The club takes matters of this kind very seriously and, whilst Steve was deeply sorry for the events that took place, it was important for the club to act in the best interest of the club, its supporters and stakeholders.

“The matter is now closed and Steve will be allowed to rejoin the team.”

As part of additional community work for the club, Evans will play an active part in coaching and development of young players.

Evans said: “I love the club and would like to apologise to everyone involved with the club for my recent actions.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the pitch.”
