Shrewsbury Town drop plans to get Calvin Zola
Thursday 14th October 2010, 2:00PM BST.
Boss Graham Turner today insisted Shrewsbury Town’s pursuit of Crewe striker Calvin Zola was dead in the water – despite a deal being agreed between the two clubs.
Shrewsbury had been keen to bolster their attacking options and Congolese front man Zola, 25, had been seen as the ideal option.
Crewe chief Dario Gradi is keen to recoup some of the £200,000 they paid to sign the player from Tranmere in June 2008 – but Turner revealed that it was Zola himself rather than a fee that proved the sticking point.
“It’s dead and buried now,” said Turner.
“We spoke to Crewe about signing him now on an emergency loan.
“We agreed with Crewe to a permanent deal in January but the player does not want to come to us so we move on.”
Turner is also considering bolstering his squad in the loan market, though nothing is imminent ahead of this weekend’s home clash with Lincoln City.
“As a manager you’re always looking but I’ve already got a reasonable squad of players,” he added.
“I don’t want to bring any young lads in if they are not clearly better than what we’ve got here.”
One man who will boost Shrewsbury’s options this weekend is defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff.
The Aussie was due to return to training today after missing the last two games with a groin injury he picked up in training.
“He only just failed a fitness test last Friday and he should be fully fit,” said the Town boss.”
Meanwhile, striker Tom Bradshaw has been called up into an 18-man Wales under-19s squad for three upcoming UEFA qualifiers between October 20-25.
