Bosses at Oswestry’s The New Saints football club have suspended their captain after he appeared in court charged with urinating in the street.

Steve Evans, a former Wales international defender, has been banned for an alleged breach of club standards, the Park Hall-based club said today.

Evans, 31, appeared before Mold magistrates on Monday where he admitted committing a Section 5 public order offence in his home town of Wrexham on September 20. He was fined £200 and told to pay court costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge.

Prosecutor Justin Espie said it was just after midnight a member of the public told police Evans had been “exposing his person” in Town Hill.

Police spoke to him and he then went across the road towards a fast-food take-away. There, officers saw him making a nuisance of himself and the defendant was told by police to keep away. He was then seen urinating in the street and was arrested.

Stephen Edwards, defending, said Evans had been able to turn his life around.

The defender missed Wednesday’s Loosemores League Cup draw with Airbus UK Broughton.

A club spokesman said: “The New Saints have suspended Steve Evans for a publicised incident pending a disciplinary hearing that will be held next week.

“We take disciplinary matters very seriously and, whilst Steve is our captain and one of our most significant players, as a full-time professional club we have to uphold certain standards.

“He will not take part in Sunday’s fixture against Aberystwyth Town, or any further games, until the outcome is known.”
