Shrewsbury Town set for Port Vale blockbuster
Tuesday 28th September 2010, 2:20PM BST.
Graham Turner has urged his Shrewsbury Town team to relish tonight’s top-of-the-table League Two blockbuster at Port Vale.
Town make the short trip for the Staffordshire-Shropshire derby after being dislodged from the top of the table by tonight’s hosts at the weekend.
Victory over Vale would see Shrewsbury return to the summit, and Town boss Turner wants his side to thrive on the big early-season occasion.
“On paper, it has the makings of a good game,” said Turner.
“Both teams are going well, there will be a good atmosphere under the lights and it’s one for the players to relish.
“Port Vale have had a good start to the season and they are one of the teams I forecast at the start of the season to do well.
“But it’s about what we do. If we can get our game going, we are capable of winning.
“We need to keep building our points tally. Three points tonight would do that and if that takes us back top of the table, then great.”
Defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff looks set to win his race to be ready for the trip to Vale Park.
The Australian had been considered a doubt with a dead leg after Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Wycombe, but Turner is confident he will be fit.
There is also good news on midfielder Sean McAllister whose hamstring injury is only likely to keep him out of action for around a week.
Kevin McIntyre is likely to get the chance to replace McAllister tonight while Lionel Ainsworth – now free from a groin injury – will come into contention for a starting role after his goal-scoring exploits from the bench at Wycombe.
Town will be backed by a following of over 1,000 at Vale Park tonight.
Just under 1,100 tickets had been sold this morning.
Tickets are available until 4pm from the Greenhous Meadow and there will be no pay-on-the-gate in the Potteries.
