Shrewsbury Town sharp-shooter Jake Robinson has revealed pressure to retain his place and personal lifestyle changes have inspired his dramatic turnaround in fortunes.

Robinson’s two-goal salvo against Liverpool’s Carling Cup conquerors Northampton on Saturday took his season’s tally to seven goals.

That contrasts sharply to the 23-year-old’s fortunes last season when he managed just four goals in the entire campaign.

And Robinson believes the reason for his improvements are the competition for places provided by fellow strikers Tom Bradshaw, Kris Bright and Benjamin van den Broek, as well as his own off-the-pitch alterations.

“There is pressure on places because Tom, Kris and Benjy have been fantastic in training,” he said.

“They work hard and are really fighting for that place in the team.

“I have also have made a few little changes in my personal lifestyle and that’s paying dividends.

“I won’t go into too much detail but I’ve been looking after myself.

“Maybe at times last season I wasn’t concentrating on sleep patterns and what I was eating.

“But I have sorted all that. I am making a real concious effort with that and I think it’s showing.”

Robinson is refusing to set himself a season’s target but is delighted with the way he has linked up with strike partner Matt Harrold.

“Considering we had never really met before this season, it’s going well,” added Robinson.

“The number of goals between is fantastic and we have made a real connection. The service we are getting, we can’t help but create chances.

“I don’t really set a season goal target.

“My first milestone was five and the next one I aim for will be 10 and we will just go from there.

“If we keep playing like this, the sky’s the limit for the whole team.”

* Shrewsbury’s reserves were beaten 4-3 in a thriller at Accrington Stanley last night.

They trailed 4-0 at half-time but threatened a dramatic second half fightback thanks to a Tom Bradshaw brace and Lewis Neal strike.
