Boss Hope Powell saw England Women make a victorious start to their World Cup qualifying play-off in Shrewsbury and declared: “Maybe we should make this our home ground!”, writes CHRIS HUDSON.

A 2-0 victory over Switzerland at the Greenhous Meadow last night means England are well on course to reach the World Cup in Germany next year.

They go into Thursday’s second leg over in Switzerland in a commanding position after maintaining their 100 per cent record at Shrewsbury’s ground.

It is now three wins out of three in Shropshire, all without conceding, after previous victories over Spain in a qualifier and Norway in a friendly.

A crowd of 4,119 witnessed last night’s success, secured thanks to goals for Fara Williams and Kelly Smith, and Powell was delighted by the support of the Shropshire public.

“We’ve done well here, maybe we should make this our home ground,” she said.

“The kick-off time was changed quite late on (to accommodate live broadcast on BBC3) so to have more than 4,000 here was great.

“We’d all love to say a big thank you to the people who came out to support us — it spurred us on.

“It’s always nice to be here and we will look forward to returning.”
