Wolves’ Matt Jarvis signs new contract
Friday 10th September 2010, 3:17PM BST.
Wolves today announced winger Matt Jarvis has been awarded a five-year contract to reward his consistent form.
The 24-year-old still had two years on his existing deal signed in February 2009, and the new deal ties him to Molineux until 2015.
Negotiations have been ongoing for some time and the news is not a kneejerk reaction to the former Gillingham man being in the frame for the recent England Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
Jarvis, who is due to make his 150th League start of his career at Fulham tomorrow, has had a sizzling start to the season and caught the eye of England boss Fabio Capello in the 1-1 draw at Everton.
And Wolves believe there is more improvement to come from the wideman, who has operated on both flanks this season.
“There was a lot of speculation linking him to a possible England call-up for the recent qualifiers which shows the progress he’s been making,” said chief executive Jez Moxey. “And we’re confident he still has more improvement to come.”
Boss Mick McCarthy said: “He’s just got better and better, so much so that there was the suggestion of an England call-up last month.
“He always wants to work hard and improve and we’re looking forward to him doing that with Wolves.”
Moxey added: “We’ve been talking to Matt and his representative for a long period of time.
“He had less than two years remaining on his contract, and it was the right time to do something.”
Jarvis paid tribute to the club, fans and McCarthy, saying: “If you’re doing well here your contract situation does get reviewed which is great for the players.
“It’s a good move on the club’s behalf as it helps the squad to stay together.
“The club have been fantastic and the fans have got right behind me.
“The gaffer and the backroom staff have all helped me develop my game, particularly with extra bits before and after training.”
The winger, who joined Wolves for £600,000 from the Gills in June 2007, overcame niggling injuries to become one of Wolves’ most consistent players, and is now just three short of his century at Molineux.
