Shrewsbury cricket captain Ed Foster has backed his “match-winners” to rise to one of the biggest occasions in the club’s history tomorrow.

Leaders Shrewsbury head to Kidderminster knowing maximum points would see them lift the Birmingham League premier division trophy for the first tomorrow.

Kidderminster are in second spot heading into the final game and will also be champions with a 24-point victory, while Knowle & Dorridge – who travel to Shropshire to take on Wellington – will be hoping to capitalise if either side fail to collect a maximum haul.

And Foster is confident his team can cope with the pressure of the final day thriller.

“It’s building up to the weekend and everyone is looking forward to it,” he said.

“The three teams who are in contention have been consistent all season and all have their match-winners.

“For us, the top six have scored consistently big runs and the bowlers have won us games we haven’t looked like winning.

“We just need one more big performance tomorrow.

“It’s going to be a good occasion and it sounds like there will be a fair few people from Shrewsbury making the trip.”

Foster believes winning one of the strongest titles in club cricket would rank on par with the achievement of the club claiming the National Knockout in 1983.

“It’s very difficult to compare the two but I think it would be similar in terms of achievement,” he added.

Birmingham League supremo Nick Archer revealed it is the most exciting end to the league season for many a year.

“We have had a situation where two teams have had a chance going into the final day, but one has usually required just a few bonus points,” he said.

“I can’t remember with my 10 years with the league having three teams involved — and certainly not two playing each other

“We are just hoping the weather doesn’t intervene and we can get a full afternoon’s cricket so there are no hard luck stories.”

Archer confirmed the league trophy will begin the afternoon at Kidderminster, although events will be monitored.
