Shropshire’s Rebecca Dunning in British judo’s GB World Cup Squad
Wednesday 8th September 2010, 6:30PM BST.
Shropshire judoka Rebecca Dunning has become the 25th and final member of British Judo’s GB World Cup squad after sealing her place by winning the Welsh Senior Open title.
The 22-year-old fighter, who trains at the star-studded Camberley Judo Club, will now line up against some of the sport’s elite fighters at Britain’s premier judo event which will take place at the NIA in Birmingham on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 October.
The two-day extravaganza, a European Judo Union-licensed and International Judo Federation world circuit event, will this just feature the women as Italy hosts the male equivalent.
The initial 24-strong squad was announced last month with Dunning taking the final place.
The highly-regarded Dunning produced some polished performances to claim the top prize and all but guarantee world cup selection.
Balancing act
In 2009 the Telford talent won the English Open while balancing a career in the RAF as an administrator with her judo exploits.
Dunning was granted her release at the start of this year to focus on pursuing the Olympic sport.
She is a two-time junior national champion, and becomes the fourth Shropshire fighter to be selected after Kelly Edwards, Gemma Howell and Sarah Adlington were also named in the star-laden line-up.
Karen Roberts, Performance Operations Manager for British Judo, said: “The 2010 GB World Cup will be a fantastic event for British players to gain international experience.
“Ranking points are becoming more and more important as we get closer to 2012 so international players will be attracted to the event.
“Although the points do not affect the Host Nation Qualification quota they do affect future seeding so it will also be an opportunity for our players.”
