Super Shrewsbury have hit top spot in the Birmingham League premier division – with just one game remaining.

Saturday’s six wicket home triumph over Wolverhampton saw them leapfrog Knowle & Dorridge, who were forced to settle for a losing draw against Himley, into top spot.

And it means victory at second placed Kidderminster next week would seal an historic first ever championship for the London Road club.

Shrewsbury, however, were made to work hard for victory as they were left chasing 227 from their 55 overs.

Skipper Ed Foster fell early but a brilliant 116 from Ryan Bishop and an unbeaten 72 from Joe Leach saw the home side over the line with nine balls and six wickets to spare.

Shrewsbury had looked likely to be chasing far less after reducing Wolverhampton to 77-4, but the visitors got themselves up to 226-7, leg spinner Elliott Green taking 3-50.

“It looked touch and go at one point but it turned out to be a perfectly timed chase,” said Foster.

“We didn’t bowl or field well at all and we were chasing 30 or 40 more than we should have been, but Ryan and Joe batted superbly.

“It’s good to win when you are not playing your best but I would much prefer us to be performing at our best.”

Wellington turned in a poor display as they were well beaten at Barnt Green.

Subsided

Batting first, Wellington lost Tom Saunders and Gerhard Strydom without putting a run on the board and subsided to 124 all out, Wendell Wagner and Steve Lamb the only men to reach double figures with 48 and 29 respectively.

And, despite two early wickets for Anthony O’Connor, the visitors got home by seven wickets inside 26 overs.

Shifnal suffered a major batting collapse as they suffered a seven wicket defeat at Attock in division one.

Dave Powles’ 39 and 27 from Tom Collins had put Shifnal in a strong position at 80-1.

But they were dismissed for 135 in 38 overs and, while three wickets from Adam Shimmons, threatened a revival, the hosts steadied the ship to win with 26 overs to spare.

“We were going well and then got out to willy-nilly shots and it just fell away which was a big disappointment,” said captain Stuart Blount.

“It was probably our worst performance of the season.”
