Ian Wilkinson took the honours at the 2010 Newport Nocturne in front of a record crowd of more that 15,000 spectators.

Wilkinson, riding for the Eundura Racing team, held off the challenge of Dean Windsor (Rapha Condor Sharp) and Jonny McEvoy (Motorpoint Marshals Pasta) to take the title, and his weight in beer.

The Nocturne, held in Newport town centre on Saturday night, kicked off with a past masters event which saw riders as old as 80 competing in a 12 lap race with Stoke’s Les West taking victory.

A special two man time trial followed with two local youngsters from Wolverhampton Wheelers Cycle Club given the chance to ride with Olympic medallist Chris Newton and British cycling legend Malcolm Elliott.

It was Newton and 12-year-old Jack Escritt who took the title.

And in the main event Wilkinson survived a snapped spoke to triumph from his two rivals after the three men had broken away from the main field early on. “It was great to win it,” he said. “I did just enough in the sprint.”

What a great event, a credit to the town and in particular organisers Mick and Nick Jeggo. A great crowd for top free entertainment.

Just a shame that a very small number of drivers who couldn’t get into the town centre for a few hours for something so well pre-publicised chose to be abusive to volunteer marshals, but then there are always a few….
