Shropshire’s Joe Hart has vowed not to rest on his laurels after making an impressive competitive England debut – and netting a cash bonanza for former club Shrewsbury Town.

While Jermain Defoe’s hat-trick stole the headlines in Friday night’s 4-0 victory over Bulgaria in the opening Euro 2012 qualifier, Hart’s Wembley display also drew accolades aplenty.

The 23-year-old made two vital saves in his first full competitive appearance for his country, a start which netted Shrewsbury £500,000 as part of the £1.5m deal which took him to Manchester City four years ago.

But, despite an impressive opening month of the season for club and country, Hart is still demanding more of himself.

“I’m feeling good at the moment and I’m just going to try and keep the momentum rolling,” said the former Meole Brace School pupil.

“I’m just trying to keep as many clean sheets as possible and everything is pretty good.

“But I need to stay focused because there are a lot of situations that I need to improve on.”

Honour

Hart was delighted to be part of a night which began the rebuilding process for Fabio Capello’s side after a dismal World Cup campaign.

“I really enjoyed it and everyone is pretty happy in the changing rooms,” he added. “But that’s gone now and we have to prepare for Switzerland away on Tuesday night.”

Meanwhile, Town officials have expressed their pride at seeing one of their former stars graduate to the major international stage.

A statement released by the club said: “Shrewsbury Town were delighted to see Joe Hart start the Euro 2012 qualifying game for England against Bulgaria.

“It is a great honour for Joe and recognition for his hard work and determination to achieve the highest honours in the game.

“Since Joe started to progress through the youth ranks at Shrewsbury Town his talent has always been there to see.

“The move to Manchester City was a major stepping stone in his development to become the best English goalkeeper.”
