Joe Hart delivers a ‘flawless’ performance for England
Saturday 4th September 2010, 10:32AM BST.
Shrewsbury-born goalkeeper Joe Hart cemented his position as the nation’s number one with a “flawless” performance in England’s 4-0 win against Bulgaria.
The 2010 PFA Young Player of the Year nominee is widely regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world and was untroubled as England made the perfect start to their Euro 2012 qualification campaign last night.
His performance was described by the BBC’s chief football writer, Phil McNulty, as “flawless”. He made three crucial saves, palming one shot away to set up a counter attack for an England goal.
Hart looks likely to retain his place and is an odds-on favourite to start in England’s next Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland, in Basel, on Tuesday.
Hart, a former pupil at Oxon Primary School and Meole Brace School Science College, cut his teeth with Shrewsbury Town, impressing from an early age.
He travelled with Shrewsbury Town’s first team squad to Exeter City in 2003, at the age of 15. His senior debut came a day after his 17th birthday. He graduated to the England U19 squad before transferring to Manchester City in 2006.
He travelled with England to the South African World Cup this summer, but did not feature, but has been first choice for City this season, following a loan spell at Birmingham City.
