TNS set for Llanelli clash
Friday 3rd September 2010, 12:21PM BST.
Boss Mike Davies is backing The New Saints to shrug off the loss of two key campaigners as they head to Llanelli for tomorrow’s televised Welsh Premier showdown (3.45pm).
The defending champions will be without striker Chris Sharp, who starts a two match ban, and central defender Phil Baker, who faces six weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
However, Davies is confident the Saints have enough strength in depth to offset the duo’s loss in an encounter between two sides likely to be challenging for the league crown.
Sharp was red-carded for foul and abusive language in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Bala, while Baker picked up his injury in the same game.
“We feel Chris Sharp was hard done by, but he will now be out for two games, while Pip could be out for six weeks with his hamstring,” said Davies.
“It’s disappointing, but we’ve got a cracking squad and I’ve every confidence in the lads who will come in.
Gashed
“Even at this early stage, it is a massive game tomorrow as you don’t want to be losing points against sides who you know will be around you in the table.
“Llanelli have had a disappointing start by their standards, but that will make them all the more determined to get a good result tomorrow.”
With Baker injured, Connall Rawlinson will continue in the heart of defence while front runner Matty Williams should be fit to take his place up front after requiring stitches to a gashed head against Bala.
Alex Darlington, who scored after coming on as substitute last week, could start while 18-year-old left winger Marcus Giglio, who signed from the Liverpool Academy this week, will be on the bench.
Meanwhile, Simon Williams, the TNS second string goalkeeper, has gone back to his hometown club Prestatyn on loan.
