Turner hails Shrewsbury Town’s strength

Manager Graham Turner has hailed Shrewsbury Town’s strength in depth after watching their blistering start to the season continue.
Town claimed their second League One scalp of the season last night, following up their earlier victory over Charlton in the Carling Cup with a 1-0 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy triumph at previously unbeaten Oldham.
Steve Leslie settled the tie with the only goal eight minutes from time at Boundary Park.
And Turner was delighted with the victory which came without the twin wing threat of Lionel Ainsworth and Mark Wright who were nursing minor knocks.
Key striker Matt Harrold was forced off with a slight calf strain while midfielder Sean McAllister was also replaced at half-time because of illness.
“It’s encouraging,” said a clearly delighted Turner.
“It’s the first time I’ve had a good look at Lewis Neal in the first team and the first chance to have a look at Kris Bright coming on for a period.
“We know what Benjamin van den Broek (who came on as a substitute) can do for us and the same for Kevin McIntyre who came into the side.
“It’s looking okay for a reasonably sized squad.
“If we get a few injuries or a dip in form from any of them, we know we have got people who can come in there and do the job.”
Turner felt his side were value for their victory after twice hitting the woodwork.
“They started well with the ball but without creating anything,” said Turner.
“Steve Leslie is always capable of scoring goals like that when he comes in on his left foot and he struck it well.
“We might not have had to wait that long with the efforts that hit the bar and the post but in the end we have won it and I’m delighted with that.
“We have to be pleased with the winning mentality of the players that you need if you are going to be successful.”
