Platt to be AFC Telford’s last line of defence
Wednesday 1st September 2010, 11:43AM BST.
Teenage goalkeeper Daniel Platt will be trusted as AFC Telford United’s last line of defence for Saturday’s Blue Square Bet North clash at home to Blyth Spartans.
Platt will deputise as cover for Ryan Young, who is suspended for one game after his dismissal in the 1-0 win at Vauxhall Motors two weeks ago.
The 18-year-old came on as a substitute in that one and impressed with a confident display capped by a fine late save.
Boss Andy Sinton will stick with the former Crewe youngster for the Blyth game, despite planning to sign another goalkeeper as cover to sit on the bench.
“Daniel Platt, after his performance in the Vauxhall Motors game, probably deserves an opportunity,” said Sinton.
“He didn’t put a foot – or a hand – wrong in that game. He’s been patient and he’s earned the right to play.
“We’ve got to trust him, and if he does like he did in that one he’ll be fine. His handling was great and he came and took crosses confidently.”
Utility man Paul Harrison, a summer signing who has recently graduated from the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain, has linked up with Witton Albion.
Harrison’s season was delayed by problems with international clearance and he has not been able to force his way into Sinton’s matchday squad.
He made his Witton debut on Bank Holiday Monday, playing an hour in the Evo-Stik League division one north club’s 1-1 draw with Warrington Town.
Meanwhile, a Telford side beat Burton Albion reserves 1-0 in a behind closed doors game last night, with Steve Abbott the goalscorer.
Sinton arranged the fixture to give a run-out to several players who have not featured this season — including Stuart Whitehead, Ashley Woolliscroft and Will Richards.
“It was very useful,” said the Telford boss. “I’m grateful to Paul Peschisolido (the Burton manager) for agreeing to come.
“Our lads showed great attitude and it was a good performance. I’ll be trying to organise games like this every couple of weeks or so.”
