Steven Fletcher and Jelle van Damme can give Wolves boost
Friday 27th August 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are hoping Steven Fletcher and Jelle van Damme can provide them with a major boost and be fit to continue the team’s unbeaten start to the season against Newcastle tomorrow.
Both players have missed the last two Wolves games after getting injured in the 2-1 opening day win against Stoke, Fletcher with a bruised foot, while van Damme suffered a thigh injury.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy expressed concern earlier in the week after Fletcher pulled up in discomfort in a running session last Sunday.
But the new club record £7m signing trained along with van Damme yesterday and both seem set to declare their availability for the Magpies’ clash at Molineux.
Van Damme could fill the left midfield role he occupied against Stoke with Stephen Ward at left-back, after George Elokobi was given a tough time at Everton last week.
Fletcher might have to settle for a place on the bench as Kevin Doyle looks for more match time to get up to full sharpness, and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake having got off the mark at Goodison last week, and started the campaign in good form.
Doyle believes Wolves’ attack now mean business in the Premier League.
“It’s great that we have the level of players we have,” said Doyle.
“It just shows how much the club has come on again from last year.
“The really big teams have three or four strikers who could play any week without necessarily weakening their line-up.
“It’s only a good thing with three of us and maybe another on the way because hopefully there will be four of us fighting it out.
“Myself and Fletcher play for our countries and Sylvan was top scorer in the Championship for two years so we’ve got a good level of striker here.
“Injury and fitness-wise I’m fine, I just need the sharpness that comes with games.”
