Trainer Donald McCain has taken responsibility for the lacklustre showing of Shropshire-owned Overturn in the ToteSport Ebor at York, writes JAMES GARRISON.

The six-year-old, owned by Tim Leslie who farms north of Telford, had been a leading contender to add yesterday’s prestigious handicap to his victories in the John Smith’s Northumberland Plate and Galway Hurdle.

But, after featuring prominently early, Overturn faded badly and was eased home the last of the 20 runners.

“It’s my fault and I’ll sit in the naughty corner for a bit,” said Cholmondeley-based trainer McCain.

“He seemed in great nick but maybe I got greedy. He has been no different at home but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. He got himself into a terrible tizz beforehand. He is fine, but his heart rate is very high. He’ll have a holiday now.”

There was better news for Shropshire border trainer Brain Baugh who is poised to beat his best tally of winners for the third season running after Comptonspirit won the 5f handicap at Carlisle at odds of 8-1 to make it 15 for the season.

Baugh, who is based in Woore, said: “We have probably got better horses but we are not doing anything different — if you could bottle it, you would sell it.”
