TNS set for Prestatyn Town clash
Friday 13th August 2010, 10:30AM BST.
After their European excursions, The New Saints can ill afford to lose their focus when they launch the defence of their Welsh Premier Super 12 title at home to Prestatyn Town tonight (7.45pm).
The Saints can go into the encounter in good heart after impressing in the Champions League ties against Bohemians and Anderlecht, but will be wary that the Seasiders will prove an early threat in the league.
“We’ve had a cracking pre-season with the Champions League and, having played in front of 22,000 at Anderlecht, we don’t want tonight to be an anti-climax,” said manager Mike Davies.
“It’s now back to the bread and butter and we need to keep our focus as it’s a tougher league this season in the Super 12 with every team capable of beating each other.
“It’s important we get off to a good start against Prestatyn and the lads will be single-minded in their approach to the game.”
With a strong squad at his disposal, Davies is pondering changes to ensure players remain fresh ahead of next Thursday’s Europa League trip to CSKA Sofia.
Skipper Steve Evans should take his place in the heart of defence after shaking off a dead leg that saw him taken off in the second half against Anderlecht.
But left back Chris Marriott and Aeron Edwards are both missing after picking up knee injuries.
Meanwhile, TNS duo, striker Craig Whitfield and midfielder Sean Jones are heading to Newtown on loan, where they will be linking up with former boss Andy Cale who has recently taken over at Latham Park.
Ryan Marriott is also going out on loan to Welsh Premier rivals Aberystwyth Town.
