Shropshire to be without six Minor Counties winners
Friday 13th August 2010, 11:21AM BST.
Six of Shropshire’s heroes from their Minor Counties Trophy triumph will miss the final game of the season this weekend.
Shropshire will be looking to build on their famous one-day final triumph over Lincolnshire on Wednesday when they take on Cheshire in the final Minor Counties Championship clash which runs from Sunday until Tuesday at Alderley Edge.
But they will have to do so without a host of key performers.
Captain Ed Foster and vice-captain Matt Tilt are both ruled out through work commitments, while seam duo Steve Taylor and Michael Barnard are absent because of heel injuries.
Joe Leach and Mark Downes, who haven’t played a three-day game this season, also drop out from the team which was successful at Durham and Shropshire will hand debuts to two youngsters.
Bridgnorth’s left arm seamer and batsman Jack Edwards, aged 16, gets the nod.
And Wellington and Shrewsbury School’s 18-year-old wicket-keeper batsman Ben Price is also included and will don the gloves.
“Jack has been doing well for Bridgnorth and Shropshire under-17s so he deserves his chance,” said captain Ed Foster today.
“The lads at Bridgnorth say he is getting better all the while.
“I’ve come across Ben a few times and he is a good cricketer so it’s great to give a chance to two more young lads.”
Dan Bowen and Richard Oliver, who missed out on the final XI at Durham having been named in the squad, both get starts, while Jonty Mountford and three-day batting specialist Alex Huxley return.
In the absence of Ed Foster, brother Rob will captain the side for the first time.
Neither Shropshire or Cheshire have a chance of winning the western division title.
