Turner looking ahead to Stoke v Shrewsbury in Carling Cup
Thursday 12th August 2010, 2:05PM BST.
Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner today looked ahead to an intriguing Carling Cup battle with Premier League Stoke.
Town’s reward for their stunning come-from-behind 4-3 triumph over Charlton in round one on Tuesday night was a second round trip to the Potteries.
And Turner is looking forward to the challenge of trying to claim a top flight scalp as his side aim to build on their early season momentum.
“To be drawn against a Premier League team is always an interesting one,” said Turner today.
“From a supporters viewpoint, it is something to look forward to, it’s just down the road and I would imagine we will take a good following.
“From a player’s point of view, it’s the chance to go and pit their wits against Premier League players at a Premier League ground which will be a great challenge for them.
Imagine
“You always look to get a home tie but it’s an interesting tie for us and I would imagine there would be a crowd of between 12,000 and 15,000 there.”
The game, which will take place in the week commencing Monday, August 23, is sure to revive memories of Town’s last trip to the Britannia Stadium in 2004 when they defeated Aldershot to win the Nationwide Conference play-offs and seal an immediate return to the Football League.
It will be the first competitive game between Shrewsbury and Stoke for 18 years.
Town won the last meeting between the sides at Gay Meadow on New Year’s Day in 1992, Kevin Summerfield scoring the only goal of the game.
