Super Shropshire were today enjoying the champion feeling after becoming kings of Minor Counties one-day cricket.

Ed Foster’s side ended 37 years of hurt by yesterday winning the first major piece of silverware since 1973, seeing off Lincolnshire byan emphatic seven wickets in the MCCA Trophy final at Durham.

Shropshire’s successful pursuit of a target of 250 – they got home with more than five of their 50 overs to spare – brought euphoric scenes at the Riverside ground.

And celebrations for players, officials and supporters continued into the early hours of the morning in the north east.

But the party was cut short for delighted captain Foster who was forced to return to the Midlands shortly after his side’s triumph.

“I stayed at the hotel until about 9pm but then had to drive back because I had a 9am meeting for work in Reading this morning,” said Foster.

“But it was a great day and I’m sure all the boys enjoyed the celebrations last night.

“The last text I got was at 2.30am so I’m sure it was a good night.”

Foster was thrilled his side had managed to match the achievements of the 1973 team, the only other Shropshire side to win a Minor Counties trophy.

“I think I’ve had about 100 text messages from people all around Shropshire since we won last night so it shows how much it means to everybody,” added Foster, whose unbeaten 95 earned him the man-of-the-match

“I know everybody, particularly the committee, have been yearning to win a trophy.

“We have come close by getting to a few one-day finals and we have almost won the Championship a couple of times.

“But it’s great to finally do it for everyone involved.”

Foster was delighted his side’s margin of victory was so emphatic as they cruised past their target with more than five overs to spare.

“It was a dominant performance and we ran out convincing winners in the end,” he added.
