Turner set for Shrews v Charlton Athletic
Tuesday 10th August 2010, 11:51AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner has set his sights on a Carling Cup giant-killing in tonight’s mouthwatering first round tie with Charlton Athletic.
Town got their League campaign off to a dream start on Saturday when they defeated Bradford 3-1.
Attention now turns to knockout football with the visit to the Greenhous Meadow of a Charlton side who are expected to be challenging for promotion from League One.
And Turner is keen for his side to maintain their early season momentum.
“It’s a great tie for us,” said the Shrewsbury supremo.
“Charlton are a big club who were gracing the Premier League not so long ago and finishing above mid-table.
“We know they have got good resources and that they are desperate to get promoted.
“We feel we have got a chance in the game.
“If we can play near to the level we did against Bradford, there is that opportunity.
“If they under-estimate us in any way, there is a further opportunity.
“But it’s just a nice game to look forward to. Players, particularly at this stage of the season, are under pressure to get league points and there is great expectation here.
“I think this is a release from those pressures.”
Shrewsbury have only managed to progress past the first round of the Carling Cup once in the last five seasons.
And Turner is anxious for the club to enjoy greater success in the cup competitions.
Interest
“Cup runs in recent seasons here have been sadly lacking,” Turner added.
“It would be nice to bring in some extra money and good cup runs don’t half create good interest amongst supporters.
“If we can get through and get a decent draw, it lifts the place again and captures people’s imagination.
“Charlton in itself is a good game but there is also the prospect of more to come later on.”
Turner will be forced into at least one change from the side which beat Bradford on Saturday with Kevin McIntyre beginning a three-match suspension.
Should tonight’s game be level after 90 minutes, it will go to extra time and then penalties.
