Shropshire cricketers raring to go for final date

Shropshire will select from a 13-man squad as they aim to end their 37-year search for a major cricket trophy on Wednesday.

Captain Ed Foster has a fully fit squad at his disposal for the MCCA Trophy final against Lincolnshire at Durham’s Riverside Ground.

The only doubt centred around Shrewsbury paceman Michael Barnard who has been troubled by a groin and hip problem for the last six weeks.

But he made a second team appearance for his club last week and then returned to first team duty with a five wicket haul in Shrewsbury’s Birmingham League premier division victory over Walmley.

“Mike felt fine after he had bowled over the last two weeks so there are no problems with him,” said Foster.

“It’s a strong squad and all the lads in there have contributed during the one-day matches we have played so far this season.

“Its now about trying to produce a big performance on the day.”

Wellington allrounder Mark Downes is rewarded for his fine bowling display in the semi-final victory at Hertfordshire with a place in the squad, while professionals Chris Murtagh and Andy Gray are both available.

Shropshire’s only silverware in their 53 years in the Minor Counties came when they won the Championship in 1973.

They have reached the one-day final three times previously, but have been beaten on each occasion.
