TNS ‘have done Shropshire proud’ says council leader

The New Saints football club have put Shropshire sport on the sporting map through their efforts in this year’s European Champions League, the county’s council leader said today.

Keith Barrow was speaking ahead of the Oswestry side’s glamour clash with European giants Anderlecht tonight in Belgium.

Mr Barrow said whether the team won or lost tonight, the Park Hall-based club had done Shropshire proud.

He said: “I have been following their progress with a interest and I think what they have done is great for Oswestry and Shropshire.

“They played really well to beat Bohemians in the last qualifying round and I am sure they will do their best against Anderlecht.

“They have a lot to do to progress in the competition but I felt they were unlucky to lose 3-1 to Anderlecht in the first leg of the tie. Hopefully they can turn it around in Belgium although it will be a tough job.”

The New Saints’ general manager Ian Williams said the club and its players were proud to be ambassadors for Shropshire.

He said: “We are in the unique position of being able to play in England albeit it through the Welsh league system and bring European football to Oswestry.

“It has been fantastic for the region and for Shropshire and there has been a lot of interest.”
