A young Shropshire goalkeeper has netted an international call up.

Issy Foster, from High Ercall near Telford, has been selected for England Under 19s’ two friendly matches against Denmark and the Republic of Ireland next month.

Isyy who plays for TNS Women, will join up with her international team-mates for a five day training camp from August 15 in Manchester.

It is the first time 16-year-old Issy has been called up at this level — having previously played for England under 15s. And she said she was shocked to receive the call up.

She said: “It was a big surprise to be called up but a welcome one. I’ve been in two England under 15 squads but have never played.

“We’re playing two games against Denmark and Ireland as part of the training camp. We play Denmark on the Tuesday and then Ireland on the Wednesday and I’m looking forward to it.”

Issy said she wasn’t expecting to get on the pitch, but added it was a great experience to be part of the squad.

“I’m not expecting to play because there’s six goalkeepers in the squad but it’s about getting myself known.

“There will be quite a few girls older than me there but I’m looking forward to it.

“I don’t know where the matches are taking place or where we are training yet but hopefully the facilities will be good.”

Issy, who started out with Shawbury, has been playing in goal for six years.

She added: “I started off playing football at about under 10s and played out for about a month but then had to go in goal because our keeper was injured.

“I enjoyed it and I was quite good so I stayed there and ended up taking the goalkeeper’s place.”

And her mum Anita was delighted to see her daughter’s hard work pay off.

She said: “It will be a good experience to be in that set-up and training with the other players.

“We’re very proud of her.”
