Graham Turner happy with new faces at Shrewsbury Town
Tuesday 3rd August 2010, 7:19PM BST.
Boss Graham Turner has unveiled his new-look Shrewsbury Town – and insists he is happy with his line-up.
Shrewsbury’s 26-man first team squad faced the cameras at the annual eve-of-season press day yesterday – all sporting the club’s special 125th anniversary kit.
And that meant a first view of all the nine new summer signings who have been brought in by returning chief Turner.
The 62-year-old manager has certainly been busy in the transfer market – snapping up goalkeeper Ben Smith, defenders Ian Sharps, David Raven, Mat Sadler and Daniel O’Donnell, midfielder Sean McAllister, wingers Mark Wright and Lionel Ainsworth and striker Matt Harrold.
There are six homegrown youngsters in his squad – with Hakan Duyan, Connor Goldson, Danny Taylor, Jon Taylor and Tom Bradshaw all getting their first professional contracts and Harry Hooman retained for a second season.
“I think we’ve got a fairly well-rounded squad,” said Turner. “One or two of the youngsters are showing promise and we’ll never be afraid to throw them in.
“We’ve got some senior players now in all positions, with competition for places.
“There seems to be a good spirit amongst them – though the testing time comes from Saturday onwards.
“But the way we’ve gone through pre-season, we’re very happy with what’s happened.”
Centre-back O’Donnell and winger Ainsworth are the latest two arrivals and Turner admits it may take some time to integrate them into the team.
O’Donnell has signed a six-month deal, having played the last two friendlies – the first under the pseudonym of Dan Smith.
But Ainsworth has not even had that luxury, completing his deal yesterday morning to make him a fully fledged Town player.
“With two coming in very late, we need a breathing space to get them all bedded down and to get that understanding between players,” added Turner.
“We hope it all gels quickly, but it might take a bit of time.”
