Steven Fletcher today set himself the ambitious target of overhauling his 12-goal tally at Burnley for Wolves this season.

The £7m club-record buy believes he can rectify his new team’s tag as the top-flight’s lowest scorers by doing what no Molineux player has done in the Premier League get into double figures.

Not since John Richards hit 13 League goals in 1980-81 has a Wolves marksman hit double figures in the top division, with Henri Camara and Kevin Doyle’s respective tallies of seven and nine the only markers in the Premier League.

But 23-year-old Fletcher, who was Wolves’ stand-out player in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Leeds, believes he can buck the trend after admitting he feels in excellent shape.

“Hopefully I can beat what I scored last season and if I can, it will be a good achievement,” said the Scotland international.

Delighted

“I’d be delighted with that. I don’t want to put pressure on myself, I like to just take it as it comes. But I feel sharp and it’s coming together now.”

Fletcher, who actually scored eight of his 12 in the Premier League, admits his first priority is to win a place with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Doyle looking sharp.

“I just want to get in the team,” he said. “Sylvan and Doyle are looking very sharp so we have good options. If I get in the team hopefully I can chip in with the goals.”

Despite being relegated with Burnley, Fletcher believes the experience has made him a better player.

“It’s always good to get experience and I have a year in the Premier League under my belt now,” he said.

“I’ve been playing first team football since I was really young, so I’ve a lot of experience for my age and I want to take that and help the team.

“Staying in the league was a good achievement for Wolves last season and hopefully we can build on that.”
