It’s been all change at AFC Telford United this summer – but two of the old guard sealed a deserved victory at Welsh full-timers Llanelli.

New boss Andy Sinton has tried out a dozen or more trialists and brought in several new faces, but it was two of the men he inherited from last season’s squad who found the target at Stebonheath Park.

Midfielder Phil Trainer, much-maligned by some fans but clearly a central figure in Sinton’s masterplan, bagged the opener on 24 minutes.

And Danny Carey-Bertram, a second half substitute, showed that he can still be a big threat in front of goal with a well taken second.

There could be no complaints about the result, with Telford dominating the first half and rarely looking troubled in a more even, and sometimes rather tetchy second period.

Trainer came close to opening the scoring on 17 minutes, heading Sean Newton’s corner over the top.

Just two minutes later it was Llanelli goalkeeper Craig Richards who came to his side’s rescue – saving at the feet of Alex Meechan.

Smart block

He could do nothing to stop Trainer breaking the deadlock five minutes later, the midfielder blasting in from eight yards after the ball had ricocheted around in the area.

The Bucks continued to press and Llanelli – fielding several players who had also played a half against League One side Bristol Rovers the previous night – took until the 34th minute to even get a sight of goal.

Impressive centre-back Shane Killock snuffed that out with a smart block, and Telford went back to controlling the game with little concern.

The second half was a flatter affair, though Paul Harrison did fire over the bar for the Bucks and trialist Karl Broadhurst – playing at right-back because Martyn Naylor and Ashley Woolliscroft were both injured – also went close.

Llanelli might have equalised five minutes from time, but Ryan Young showed why he is still the Bucks’ No 1 with a fine save to tip a curling 18-yard shot from Josh Knight around the post.

And Llanelli were made to pay for that as Carey-Bertram ensured an away victory in the 89th minute.

He dispossessed home midfielder Antonio Corbisiero, rounded the keeper smartly and slotted home from a narrow angle on the left.
