Lionel Ainsworth joins Shrewsbury Town
Monday 2nd August 2010, 1:01PM BST.
Boss Graham Turner today moved to complete Shrewsbury Town’s ninth pre-season signing – finalising a deal for long-term target Lionel Ainsworth.
The winger, 22, has joined from Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee – and the League One side will have a sell-on clause.
He has been a high priority target for Turner, who managed the former Derby man during his time at Hereford.
“I’m delighted to have finally brought Lionel to the club – it’s something we’ve been working on for nearly six weeks,” said Turner.
“It was initially going to be a half-season loan, but Huddersfield changed their mind on that.
“We’ve finally reached an agreement on a transfer, with Huddersfield taking a portion of any future sell-on fee and I’m delighted to get him.
“He scores goals and creates opportunities for other players,” Turner added.
“He’s got a lot of pace and he can go past full-backs and provide good service.”
Ainsworth’s arrival at the Greenhous Meadow follows hot on the heals of centre-back Daniel O’Donnell, who has agreed a six-month contract.
Former Crewe man O’Donnell played in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Tranmere, having also featured as a mystery trialist under the pseudonym of Dan Smith in the 0-0 draw with Coventry last Tuesday.
“He’s athletic, he’s mobile, he can head the ball and I was quite surprised he was still on the market last week,” said Turner.
“I thought he did very well in the first half and he did okay last Tuesday.
“I knew him from his Liverpool days. He was in Liverpool reserves fairly young and I watched him several times for Liverpool reserves.
“We’ve got a reasonable amount of competition for places with Daniel O’Donnell coming in and, with Shane Cansdell-Sheriff and Ian Sharps, that’s three decent central defenders.”
l Former Shrewsbury striker Jake Simpson was part of the Tranmere squad on Saturday’s game with the son of ex-Town boss Paul Simpson coming on for the final third of the match.
And he was introduced to the field by his brother Joe – who was on fourth official duty at the game.
