Midfielder Sean McAllister has become the latest piece in Graham Turner’s Shrewsbury Town jigsaw after agreeing a two-year contract.

McAllister has signed after his release from Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 73 appearances at Championship level before departing at the end of last season.

Town boss Graham Turner is delighted with his sixth summer signing – and remains hopeful of adding to that number in the coming days, with the possibility one more deal could be finalised later today.

Energy levels

“Sean is 22 and has had some experience in the Championship,” said Turner.

“The season before last he played in the region of 40 games in a team that had a reasonable season at that level.

“He puts his foot in, he is a decent passer and has got good energy levels.

“I think there is a surprise that he has not been signed by a club in a higher division than League Two, so hopefully we can be the beneficiaries of other people ignoring him.”

Turner is hopeful of including McAllister in Saturday’s final pre-season friendly at home to Bradford, but will assess his fitness over the next 48 hours.

“He is a bit behind in terms of fitness so it will be a fairly intense period for him in building that up,” added Turner.
“We would hope to get him involved against Tranmere.”

McAllister, who was with his home town club of Bolton as a youngster before moving to Wednesday, insists dropping down two divisions hasn’t proved a major wrench.

“I was on the PFA player’s list (for free agents) and first heard about Shrewsbury’s interest a couple of weeks ago,” said McAllister.

“I came in to see the manager on Monday and was very impressed with what I saw and heard.

“I watched the game against Coventry on Tuesday and the way the team got the ball down and passed, it was very appealing.

“I need to go on a bit of a crash course in pre-season training because I’ve mainly just done running on my own and that only gets you so far.

“But hopefully the sharpness will soon come.”
