Gillespie hails county success

Shropshire’s men were today celebrating promotion at County Tennis Week – with a game to spare.
Yesterday’s 5-4 victory over Staffordshire guaranteed Shropshire a top two finish in the seven-team division seven at Bexleyheath.
Shropshire were relegated to the bottom tier two years ago, but can now look forward to a return to division six in 2011.
“It’s been a great effort from the lads,” said captain Gillespie.
“I knew we had a strong team this year but we have probably exceeded our expectations.
“The performances have been very good and now we will do what we can to establish ourselves in division six.
But a lot depends on availability because it’s a big commitment having to take a week off work to compete.”
Shropshire were today playing the Channel Islands, who have also been promoted. The winners will have the honour of being group winners but Shropshire have been forced into two changes.
Steve Tart and Adam Baldwin – who alongside Alan Bevan has won 27 successive matches at County Week – have both had to return to work so Kyle Fellows and Mike Barton come in for their debuts.
Shropshire ladies registered their third victory in four games by thumping Lincolnshire 8-1, but their promotion hopes at Oxfordshire are all but over.
