Van den Broek to miss crucial Shrews’ tie
Thursday 22nd July 2010, 3:00PM BST.
Dutchman Benjamin van den Broek looks set to miss out on Shrewsbury’s second leg of their Joma South West Challenge Cup programme tonight.
Van den Broek, who scored in Monday’s 5-1 success over Ilfracombe Town is struggling with a minor Achilles problem.
And, while the problem is not considered serious, that means he is unlikely to be risked in tonight’s second and final group game against Rushden & Diamonds at Torrington.
On the credit side, right back Dean Holden and young striker Tom Bradshaw have both recovered from thigh problems, with manager Graham Turner hopeful the duo can play some part in tonight’s game.
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and David Raven, one of the five summer recruits completed so far, are on course to be given starts after being named amongst the substitutes on Monday.
And trialist goalkeeper Ben Smith could also be given the chance to catch the eye.
Victory
Despite the substitutes row which has marred the Devon-based tournament, Turner remains keen to earn a victory over the Blue Square Bet Premier opponents tonight.
“It’s all part of our preparation for the coming season so we will work this morning, prepare right for the game and hope that we get the right result,” said Turner.
“It’s a step up in standard from Monday night in terms of the opposition and it’s closer to what we will come up against once the season starts on August 7.”
The winner of tonight’s game will top the group and progress to the weekend’s knockout stages after Rushden matched Shrewsbury’s 5-1 victory margin over Ilfracombe last night.
The tournament had a major shock last night when Havant & Waterlooville, of Blue Square Bet South, thumped Championship outfit Doncaster 5-0 while Accrington Stanley were 5-2 winners over Bideford.
