Shropshire tennis team serves up super start

Shropshire’s men have made a flying start to County Tennis Week.

Ian Gillespie’s side were 8-1 winners over Oxfordshire on the opening day at Bexleyheath in Kent.

Alan Bevan and Adam Baldwin, who won all 15 of their rubbers last year, continued where they left off 12 months ago with a clean sweep from their trio of matches yesterday.

Ben Disley and James Knight also won all three of their matches while captain Gillespie and veteran Bill Gowans suffered the only defeat, but bounced back with victory in their other two rubbers.

Shropshire were due to face Gloucestershire today, with their squad bolstered by the arrival of Steve Tart.

There was contrasting fortunes for the ladies team who suffered an 8-1 defeat against Gloucestershire in Oxford.

Captain Holly Mowling teamed up with Natalie Freegard as Shropshire’s No 1 pair and registered the only victory, winning their last match 6-4 6-2. They lost their other two matches 6-4 7-5 and 6-2 6-2.

Debutant Melissa Martin was paired with Emma Windsor but lost their matches 6-2 6-2; 6-1 6-1 and 2-6 6-3 7-5.

Jo Fowler and Mia Loney – also making her first senior appearance – also had a difficult day losing their three matches 6-4 6-1, 6-2 6-2 and 6-2 6-3.

The ladies were looking to bounce back against Cornwall today.
