Shropshire cricketers await news of Jono

Shropshire are sweating on the fitness of key allrounder Jono Whitney ahead of their key Minor Counties Championship meeting with Cornwall this weekend.

Bridgnorth’s Whitney is struggling with an elbow injury which makes him a doubt for the fourth three-day western division game of the season, which gets underway at Whitchurch on Sunday.

“We are fairly sure Jono won’t be able to bowl in the game so it’s now just a question of waiting to see if he can play as a batsman,” said captain Ed Foster.

“I’m led to believe he is a major doubt for Bridgnorth’s (Birmingham League) game on Saturday so we will just have to wait and see closer to Sunday.”

Shropshire are still without front-line seamer Michael Barnard, who continues to struggle with a groin problem which has ruled him out of action for the last five weeks.

Recall

Oswestry opening batsman Alex Huxley returns after missing the narrow defeat to Oxfordshire last time out, with Bridgnorth’s Ryan Lockley missing out.

Shropshire have named a 13-man squad, which also includes a recall for Shifnal seamer Jonty Mountford.

“Jonty has had a good season for Shifnal and I’m sure he will be really looking forward to playing for Shropshire again,” added Foster.

“He has played a key role for Shifnal with Adam Shimmons and Chris Whelan not playing many games.”

Shropshire enter the weekend in third place in the western division table.

The full squad is: Ed Foster (Shrewsbury, captain), Alex Huxley (Oswestry), Chris Murtagh (Reigate), Rob Foster (Shrewsbury), Jono Whitney (Bridgnorth), Richard Oliver (Whitchurch), Andy Gray (Alvaston & Boulton), Matt Tilt (St Georges), Steve Taylor (St Georges), Jonty Mountford (Shifnal), Dan Bowen (Whitchurch), Elliott Green (Shrewsbury), Will Parton (Shrewsbury).
