League fixture threatens Quatt’s game at Lord’s

A Shropshire cricket team has seen its hopes of reaching a national final at Lord’s jeopardised – because they have been ordered to fulfil a league fixture.

Quatt are due to entertain Northop in the last 16 of the nPower Village Cup on Sunday, knowing victory will take them within two games of reaching the final at Lord’s.

But the game clashes with one of only two sets of Sunday fixtures in the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League season.

And league officials have refused a request from Quatt for their home fixture against Trysull to be postponed until a later date, to allow them to play Northop.

“We have spoken to people from Wisden who organise the tournament, the Shropshire Cricket Board and the English Cricket Board,” said Quatt’s Village Cup team captain Craig Jones.

“The general view is that the Village Cup should take preference because it is good kudos for both Shropshire cricket and the league.

“Trysull have said they are prepared to write a letter to the league saying they are happy to support Quatt, but the league are saying we have to play it.

“It’s hard to take because all the league fixtures were cancelled when Shrewsbury Town got to Wembley for the play-off final (in 2007).

“That affected none of our players but we had to move the game. This affects all of our players and we are told we have to play it.”

Jones is continuing talks with Wisden and Northop officials in an attempt to resolve the situation.

But Quatt could be forced to play their Village Cup tie and two Marston’s League games — first and second XIs — against Trysull on Sunday, an outcome which could cause problems with team selection and venues for matches.

Crucial

There is a possibility the Village Cup game could be pushed back a week, although that could see Quatt lose crucial home advantage.

Marston’s League chairman Mike Robinson revealed the stance had been taken to ensure all games were played simultaneously, insisting the potential of varying weather played a major role in the thinking.

“The management committee believe it’s in the best interests of the league as a whole if all the set of fixtures are played on the same day,” he said.

“It’s been a very tough decision and we know we may be in a minority of one.

“But we have to act in what we believe to be the best interests of everybody and the integrity of the league.”

I can not believe the league is being this harsh on Quatt CC. Surely the match could be rearranged? I think its really unfair on the players who train and work hard to reach success in the knock outs, for them then to be told its all been for nothing. If the league has such rules and strict playing fixtures why is the cup allowed to be played along side the league? I’m sure if Quatt CC got to Lords they would jump on their success!

    Twink the legend!!!!!!!!

Absolute disgrace. The league committee have not got a clue. All they are doing is shafting Quatt who are representing our league. Surely it is a feather in the Marstons league to have one of our teams getting to Lords?????

Why don’t Quatt play their first team in the cup game and their second and youth team for the league games or call up on reserve players?

They could play a mixture of youth and experienced players in the second team to bring on the future players.

This is a ludicrous situation. I think the SPCL should have asked the Member Clubs for their views.

I believe the League should support Quatt in their quest for national glory.

How ridiculous, is there no common sense in sport in general.

It’s a nonsence, I am sure if you asked the other league clubs the majority would be in favour of allowing Quatt to play their cup fixture and it’s the committees fault there are too many sides in the league anyway thus having to play on Sundays.

The Premier league commitee are a total joke, but you only have to look at who runs it to realise that! The Manby Bowdler league is a far better run league

Been away from the local cricket scene for some years now but good to see that somethings never change! Just staggering that those administrating can come to that decision. Bigger picture chaps?

I cannot believe what I am reading…surely the league check when their teams are playing in outside cups before they create the fixture list?!? I would suggest that from now on quatt state that they are representing Shropshire and not the League as it seems they or the sponsors are not interested in the positive publicity a cup run brings….poor very poor!

So quatt play a very understrength side in the premier division, which could hinder other clubs (if they lose) more so than there rearranged game being called off due to rain… Can imagine more arguements about that from other clubs. Bizzare decision!

Would the league have done this if it had been one of the “big” clubs involved. I think not.
